ABOUT  US

Greyhound Pets of America has had a long and fulfilling relationship with Wheeling Island Racetrack and Gaming Center, formerly known as Wheeling Downs.

Our adoption program started in 1985, when we were one of the few Greyhound adoption agencies in the country.  The late Joan Dillon was a great friend to us in the early days, interacting with all of us “fledglings,” and allowing us to collectively find our way through what was, then, uncharted territory.   In 1987, our group became one of the founding chapters of Greyhound Pets of America.  Many of our members and Directors are experienced in kennel life, and have an intimate knowledge of Greyhounds and their particular needs.  We have always maintained a close relationship with the racing kennels.

In June of 2002, we moved into our new, state-of-the-art kennel on the grounds of Wheeling Island.  (We had previously occupied a facility within the kennel compound, where the racers were housed.  Totally new kennel facilities have been built.)  Our kitchen is very large, and we even have a shower stall for bathing the dogs.  There are two large turnout pens (under roof) for the dogs’ convenience.

Our goal has never been one of “quantity.”  We focus, instead, on quality of placement.

We work very closely with (and provide dogs to) several other groups whose philosophies agree with ours.  We are proud to have had two successful sub-chapters of GPA (GPA/Northern Virginia and GPA/Louisville, Kentucky) who are now fully functioning chapters.  We’d like to think we have mentored them well!

If you complete an application through our chapter and are not within the area we service (Ohio, Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Northern Maryland) we will forward your application to another group which will be closer, geographically, to you.  We will not place dogs in an area where we cannot be of immediate assistance, should a problem arise.

Many thanks go to Kevin Keegan and his wife, Debbie, who have generously given of their time and talents to make this web site possible.
